What mainstream sources did not admit was that the man who bit another's finger off while two groups face off across the street had actually punched the biter in the face twice, showing obvious need for the man to take self defensive action.
Yet, most news reports do not tell Americans that the biter was under attack. An attack that might not have ended until he was killed. In comments surrounding the Jena 6 case right wingers loudly proclaimed that school yard fights could lead to death, forgetting that teachers and other authorities are usually within earshot of school yard fights which have a tendency to be broken up within minutes.
On the contrary, from what I've learned from an eyewitness the man who would later bite the finger, was alone surrounded by a more than one belligerent male, and someone had punched him multiple times. I doubt anyone in that group was attempting to restrain the hitter at all.
And as you can see from the video above, the biter had received the second hit which had landed in his mouth and bit. And that stopped the man from attacking him. Self Defense. Plain and simple.
Here's an eyewitness account of the incident and what happened earlier 'Health Care Vigil in Thousand Oaks: Provocation to violent response'. Just before the biter approached the group of right wingers a woman had tried to pass through the group to get to a tunnel which was the only way back to her car, but she had been harassed and had return to the pro health care group without retrieving what she needed. This is very like the actions used by Gathering of Eagles groups that would harass people protesting the Iraq War.
Please read the post above to get a good picture of what was really going on around the event.
The writer also goes through what she told to and learned from the cops, gets her picture back from cops who ruined her ability to take credit for them by releasing the images without accreditation in a later post "Finger-biting incident Update". There is also a YouTube video of Fox footage in which puncher admits he was part of the anti reform group (in earlier interview quoted by AP, other news sources, Mr. Rice said he had just come upon the group of anti reform people and was asking then what they were doing when some guy walked up, started yelling at the group and bit his fingertip off).
In the video of the interview by Fox's Cavuto notice how the host's face falls as he realizes he doesn't have a juicy story of an ally being attacked by a vicious health care reform advocate, but one of a man protecting himself from the punches of the Fox guest.
