Bloomberg News report "NATO to Support Georgia as Russian Pullout Disputed " though has broken the drought for me by mentioning oil and natural gas as a reason that the US is so interested in Georgia.

The fighting made Georgia a flashpoint in Russia's resistance to the spread of NATO to its borders. The West sees Georgia as an ally, in part because the country is an emerging corridor for oil and natural gas exports from the Caspian Sea region to Europe, skirting Russia.
I also found the comedy relief of all NATO supporting Georgia by speechifying on the subject of big bad Russia, as if such problems could be solved by a newswire equivalent of a high school debate.
