Analysts believe that Bush skipping the Bejing Olympics overwould make it hard for the two countries to work together over North Korea, etc.
Or maybe that's just more talking points from the most political administration ever.
It's possible that our boy has already ordered his nifty silk robe. Or sees another Olympics as perfect for boosting his image months before he leaves office. Legacy, Legacy, legacy you know.
The Chinese action on Tibet appears to be straight out of a Stalinist playbook (See NPR's report on the roll in of government troops at "Chinese Troops Mobilize in Provinces Near Tibet"
But the Bush administration will not be using a boycott on the Bejing Olympics as a statement (or, apparently, even as a threat) over the violence in Tibet or genocide in Darfur.
They don't want to be like Jimmy Carter, I assume. The former president caused lots of big businessmen to lose money when he called for a boycott of the Moscow Olympics after they sent troops into Afghanistan. Human rights? What is that when compared with making money--according to the Republicans.
Too bad because they've definitely made the Carter administration gain new admirers as we see what a truly mucked up administration can be.
Please don't say that lack of experience led the Bush administration to the extreme disaster it created. The administration oozed experience except for their top guy who was a gullible "Christian warrior". They lacked morals and decency.
Excerpt NY Times report "Bush Silent, but Others Speak Out on Tibet":
If the violence in Tibet grows, however, the pressure could increase for Mr. Bush to take some kind of symbolic stand. The French foreign minister said this week that he would entertain the idea of skipping the Olympics opening ceremony — a symbolic gesture that would be less than a full boycott. Mr. Johndroe said such a step was not under discussion at the White House.
“We’re focused on ending the violence now,” he said, “not an event six months from now.”
Yeah, like you guys fixed that little mess in Darfur when you could have helped, in early 2003.
The little emperor speaks on the subject:
“I’m going to the Olympics,” the president said last month, when Steven Spielberg, the filmmaker, announced that he was dropping out as an artistic adviser for the Games. “I view the Olympics as a sporting event."
And you know those right wingers feel about political causes like human rights getting in the way of sports, or making money.
The report linked immediately above advises that Bush could express his displeasure with Chinese regime's actions in Tibet by skipping the opening ceremony. I don't think so. Bush miss a showcase like that? What are they thinking?
