A few days ago I watched as Bush appeared on a self-praising infomercial in which in one sentence he claimed that his administration had increased cancer research funding (I'm going by memory here so if I get small details wrong, don't stress about it, iight?). Then he said that cancer deaths had decreased in the past few years. In other words he was giving himself credit for curing cancer.
It was one of the most obnoxious bits of political bullshit I had ever seen. (BTW, dear leader, a person who is his own best fan, must not have any others.)
So today when I happen upon a report showing that Cancer Funding had been cut for the second year in a row, imagine my shock.
Just days ago the president had assured me that his administration was committed to funding cancer research.
Here's a transcript and the video of the report I watched on cancer funding tonight.
This is just truly amazing.
I wondered if any other of our bloggers or news sources had noticed what a big whopper Bush had whooped and found that not only had
Think Progress already caught it, but some news (And TV news outlets at that) had noticed the lie a few days ago.
Of course, cancer research is likely to be important to most Americans as we age, so that may be a reason that mainstream has covered this decently.
Excerpt:
CHARLES GIBSON: The President today was pointing to all the money that the government has put into cancer research. Other people say, look, it’s earlier diagnosis. Others say better treatment is responsible for these numbers. Some people say better living. So, what is it?
TIMOTHY JOHNSON, ABC NEWS MEDICAL EDITOR: Well, it’s a combination of all of the above. But when the administration tries to take credit for increased spending, per se, I think they’re misleading. It is true that the total budget for the National Cancer Institute has gone up by $1.2 billion since 2001. But most of that occurred in those early years under a Clinton initiative. The budget was actually cut last year and the projected budget for this year is to be cut even further. So, I think it’s a real tragedy that we are cutting the budget for the National Cancer Institute at a time we’re on the verge of many exciting discoveries.
