A 4.7 (Upgraded to 4.8 according to the LA Times report below. ) earthquake struck near the town of Bombay Beach California on the eastern edge of the Salton Sea at 4.55 am March 24, 2009. The town is near the San Andreas fault and near Niland Ca which had a small earthquake on January 8, 2009 on the same day that San Andreas feeder faults in the Southland also shook.
In LA Times article "Moderate Quake Strikes Salton Sea " Kate Hutton, the woman everyone in So. Cal waits for after a significant quake, says that Bombay Beach is considered the end of the massive fault line.
I have lost the original AP report I first read, but the one above will do.
Excerpt:
"The only interesting thing about this one is that it occurred at the end of the San Andreas fault," said Kate Hutton, a seismologist at Caltech. "Bombay Beach is considered the southern end of the San Andreas fault. The last swarm of earthquakes similar to this was in 2001. We're watching it closely. We'll be analyzing everything."
Map of Niland (the smaller community) also showing Bombay Beach. Compare to lower end of San Andreas Fault in image above or illustration at linked site below.
Closer illustration of lower San Andras Fault. Will allow a better look at the relationship of fault to today's and January's rumblers.
