Our brave Vice President took on an arduous journey over the wide Pacific Ocean to greet strange natives of exotic lands and bend their ears, because it's legal for him to knowingly pass fabrications outside the borders of the US.
And boy did he come up with some whoppers.
Did you know that most Americans supposedly don't want to withdraw from Iraq (despite what you've heard from respected polling sources)? And we want to "return with honor" according to our VP. There was a lot more bloviating added in, but you get the picture.
Now where did Cheney get his numbers to back up those claims? There had to have been a poll. Even a great liar like Cheney speaking overseas has to have something to keep the American mainstream journalists from calling "bullshit". All they need is one poll that goes against what all the respected poll numbers out there.
So off to Google News we go.
And lo and behold! Yes there is a
prnewswire release dated today February 20, 2007 which appears to be what Cheney is using in his Rambo speech (thank goodness no one put a gun in his hands).
Just reading the publicity release I can see major problems
But who is that amazing group that can find numbers so different than all the other polling groups?
Is it Zogby, ABC, CBS, Gallup, Newsweek, Time magazine, or some other respected balanced organization?
No. It's Public Opinion Strategy.
But wait. "Public Opinion Strategies" sounds like a group more dedicated to tilting public opinion than in measuring it. And in fact, one of the ways that public opinion is bent is through biased polling.
But, maybe it's just an unfortunate name. Maybe these guys are trying real hard to be balanced.
So back to Google. And success, we find Public Opinion Strategies.
There it is right on the front page:
PUBLIC OPINION STRATEGIES MOURNS REPUBLICAN LOSSES, CONGRATULATES MANY INDIVIDUAL WINNERS IN TOUGH RACES
Whaaaa?
They mourn Republican losses?
Real balance there! (not)
You know what they say about believing polls from partisan sources.
BTW, please note that though the newswire was released today, I'm thinking that Cheney must have had an advanced copy of the same. Aren't speeches written days in advance?
At least
Rush Limbuagh's piece mentioning the POS survey was open about who did the polling (though he didn't describe the bias you will find when you read their pages). Rush at least identified the pollsters as "Public Opinion Strategies".
But Cheney uses numbers from a biased polling source and then goes to throw Rambo style bullshit to the world.
I guess it's a tough job, but some blowhard's gotta do it.
