Drawing down retirement savings, Using reverse mortgages to extract the value from their homes. Men not wanting to work for low wages in the Bush economy are sitting it out, some hope until retirement.Low wages and lack of benefits found in jobs they could get whether skilled, professional, or post prison, (the three examples the article cites) create disincentives for working.
Despite their great numbers, many of the men not working are missing from the nation’s best-known statistic on unemployment. The jobless rate is now a low 4.6 percent, yet that number excludes most of the missing men, because they have stopped looking for work and are therefore not considered officially unemployed. That makes the unemployment rate a far less useful measure of the country’s well-being than it once was.
Indeed, a larger share of working-age men are not working today than at almost any point in the last half-century, which raises the question of how they will get by as they age. They may be forced back to work after years of absence, they may fall into poverty, or they may be rescued by the government.
Lets work out what we can see from the chart the Times provides. 12% is about double the amount that we saw in the best years under Clinton so 6% of men who won't work are due to the Bush 43 offshoring-illegal immigrant (soon to be known as guest worker program with path to citizenship) dependent economy. Men are at least 50% of the workforce so we have at least 3% more unemployment than the numbers say. In other words
the unemployment rate is at least 7.6% not 4.6%. And explained above I am only counting the extra ordinary amount of work age men who are not working. This is not comparable to the Clinton years.
If you want to add in the full number of non working men (who according to the report are not usually involved in caring for the home and children while not working) the unemployment rate would be at least 10.6%
We will update Friday when new jobs numbers come out.
