While John McCain is rallying his followers eve in the most unstable areas to "fight" the FBI is gearing up to 'investigate' ACORN.
Funny, but a few people may notice, guys that the G men work for a man who has endorsed John McCain and even in a televised video called the senator "THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!"before the Republican convention.
But still, you say, this kind of investigation must go on right?
Not this close to an election. In fact, in 2006 according to the Kansas City Star an interim US Attorney started an investigation of voter registrations against some lowly ACORN registration workers, you know the poor smucks that sign up registrants for money and therefore think they might be able to get away with padding a few more to make extra dough. Though the workers pleaded guilty, the interim US Attorney was reprimanded for investigating them within weeks of an election.
That's right. In 2006, it was unethical to instigate an investigation that could stifle voting, but in 2008 when the Republican party may lose that important unitary president slot, the FBI is ordered to jump right in and start investigating.
Guess what.
It's weeks of an election now.
What a difference a little desperation makes. But these moves don't square with equal protection under the law, does it. That poor old battered 14th amendment.
Big Question. Why weren't John McCain and the Republicans interested in ACORN and it's registration drive earlier? Why didn't they call for an investigation when it would have been more ethical, instead of calling for one now when they are desperate?
I have found a video of the part of a speech that repeats exactly the words I read that McCain said in Florida the other day, but this is reported to have been at the Republican convention. So this is normal for McCain, but I don't think that makes it any less a fascist style speech. Click on thumbnail video to listen, or click again to go to video page for full size. The end is particularly disturbing especially considering that this is a man who wants to win at all costs and wants to invade Iran and possibly go up against Russia to pay back the fat cats that have given up to $70k each (through suspicious gaming of the campaign finance rules) to his campaign.
The AP at the Washington Post reports on the new FBI investigation in "Officials: FBI investigates ACORN for voter fraud ":
...the FBI [is] looking at results of recent raids on ACORN offices in several states for any evidence of a coordinated national scam.
That's any evidence of a coordinated effort, okay?
Acorn defends itself in the AP article:
ACORN has said the "vast majority" of its workers are conscientious, but some might have turned in duplicate applications or provided fake information to pad their pay. Workers caught submitting false information have been fired, ACORN officials say.
ACORN says laws in a number of states require it to submit all registration cards it collects even dubious ones, so its workers segregate applications with missing, suspicious or false information and flag them so state election officials can quickly check them further.
Get it? ACORN actually tries to catch fraudulent forms submitted by it's workers and fire those who cook them up.
A New York Times article by Michael Falcone "F.B.I. Offices Examining Activities of Acorn " reports:
Representative John Conyers Jr., a Michigan Democrat who is the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, sent a letter Thursday to Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey and Robert S. Mueller III, the F.B.I. director, expressing “shock and disappointment” that word of an investigation had leaked out.
