The mainstream news media may have had Gary Condit and the death of poor Chandra Levy in the spring and summer of 2001 to build their image of important "truth tellers" (yeah, we know how that worked out. Instead of looking at some pretty obvious signs that we might be attacked by terrorists, they weren't looking for some evidence that a man who had attacked two other young women in the DC area, but that a California Congressman had).
Then they went gungho on the war machine, calling the SOD a sexy septegenarian, etc. and merrily misled us into one war after another by sloppy reporting, meanwhile completely missing until too late the insanity of new home mortgages which have indeed failed leaving our economy reeling.
But don't worry, they are on it now. Everyday they remind us that the economy is a lot worse than it seems.
And, funny thing, it then gets worse.
Reagan was lucky because Republicans have money behind them to help or hinder news media and journalists careers, and Republicans have the will to stand up and tell mainstream how they should behave.
Obama may be too nice here, but mainstream news should really get on to other things than the gloom and doom.
It's to a point where they are making the news on the economy, not just reporting on it.
