Alberto Gonzales will be racing out the door to avoid the proverbial ass thumping by good hard wood on September 17th. This fitting occasion is known as Constitution Day as signed into law by President George W. Bush.
Let me surmize that the date was set to distract the mainstream news like Bush's wiggle dances, and comedy does.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid indicates that investigations of the AG will g
o on as reported at The Caucus at the New York Times .
Speculation starts on a replacement.
And I'm sitting here wondering if there's anyone left at Justice to turn the lights out.
I guess there's Solicitor General Paul Clement who NPR reports will be taking over for the AG until a replacement is found. (and likely hopes that the powers that be will start thinking of him as a permanent fixture).
Replacement talk focuses on Chertoff who used to work at Justice.
Bushies are most likely trying to figure out if they get more mileage from two confirmations than one or if they should get someone else.
The Washington Post adds a woman and an African American into the mix of possible replacements.

Frances Fragos Townsend
She worked in the Clinton Administration with Janet Reno and might be popular with Democrats for that reason.
and former Deputy Attorney General Larry Parker. (right with Bush)
I doubt Chertoff or maybe that's just wishful thinking. Just imagining having to listen to his voice and constant outpouring of propaganda does bad things to the head.
Tapped on Chertoff and Katrina
CNN (video) mentions Ted Olson who worked for the Republicans on Gore v Bush in 2000 and was later named as Solicitor General.
The Politico mentions most of the above and adds John Danforth a minister and former Senator, "Securities and Exchange Committee Chairman Chris Cox", and "former Attorney General William P. Barr" AG during Poppy Bush's administration in an article dated March 20, 2007 . Might their list be more complete since it wasn't done in a surprised rush? Or do recent reports have a more accurate view on what's doable now?
Stay tuned.
