Ground shaking changes in the in the primaries for next year. (I suspect Schwarzenegger wants to declare candidacy this time or the next. You don't realize why he signed this so quick? Yes, I know, but the constitution can change quickly when the neocons want it to.)
California's primary will be held on February 5, 2008.
The Washington Post ( link below) reports that 6 more big states are also eyeing the same date for their primaries too.
In fact up to half the delegates could be decided then if all proposed primaries switches are made.
For years we have been promised disaster in such a scenario , but after 2004 and what Iowa and New Hampshire did to us, I'm betting that most Democrats are willing to take our chances.
Analysts on NPR a few weeks ago predicted that Iowa caucuses could now be reset to take place before the end of the year. (Sorry no link. Heard directly on radio.)
Poor uninformed masses. "Caucuses and primaries while the Christmas lights are still up? Whatever will we do?! Quick! Lets watch the Sunday talk shows to figure out how to think!"
Analysts in the Post report say that the earlier primaries and caucuses could become even more important or (not a surprise) a long messy (implied damaging) fight ensues. No indication is made in the ties and interests in any of these sources.
Dan Balz (the Post reporter) gives us the standard analysis that the bunched up primary could give the leads to the best financed candidates like Clinton and McCain, no matter what their popularity standings are now, but Guiliani sees hope in the ability to recover from the more conservative southern primaries with a quick following vote in more northern and liberal states.
Balz also points out that candidates will not be able to afford the ads to cover a lot of big states in February (though he notes that CA's governor intended that to be a result of the early primary. Okay so no presidentlial run from Schwarzie in 2007-2008? I really think it will be too late after 4 more years. But with the GOP and big business money anything can happen. )
So candidates will rely on free news exposure. That will be interesting.
And Barack Obama adds email addresses.
