The Fact Check on the debate Tuesday October 7th that I have linked on the side makes an important point.
In their report "FactChecking Debate No. 2 " they noted that the program to reduce people's mortgages is not just a John McCain idea, as he explicitly claimed.
Excerpt:
McCain proposed to write down the amount owed by over-mortgaged homeowners and claimed the idea as his own: “It’s my proposal, it's not Sen. Obama's proposal, it's not President Bush's proposal.” But the idea isn’t new. Obama had endorsed something similar two weeks earlier, and authority for the treasury secretary to grant such relief was included in the recently passed $700 billion financial rescue package.McCain proposed to write down the amount owed by over-mortgaged homeowners and claimed the idea as his own: “It’s my proposal, it's not Sen. (FactCheck.org is run by the Annenberg Foundation. (If you read any biography of Ford or Nixon you will hear of them visiting the Republican Annenbergs. So it isn't a liberally biased source and often bends backwards and words to make an even number of accusations.)
McCain's depreciated estimate of the American intelligence is what truly astounding. He's still stuck in the era when mainstream press kept us as ill informed as possible, before blogs, alternative press through the Internet, and YouTube could get real information to people without the roadblocks of verbosity, local papers, and 15 minute evening news followed by gossip, weather and sports. I won't go into the horror of Sunday talk shows in which the Rs cemented their ability to bring new lies to the table every week much like McCain's sleazy boast last night.
