Please note I am describing man by his nationality simply to make clear these donations were also illegal because he is not a US citizen, not to denigrate a person by skin color or possible religion. If he were French, English, or Swedish I would have made that a point in the title as well.
According to the FBI, the New York Times in "Businessman With Ties to Florida G.O.P. Fund-Raiser Sargeant Is Indicted", and the AP at International Herald Tribune (no registration needed, but it's a short report, not a copy of the NYT piece), a Jordanian man, Ala'a al-Ali, aka Ala'a Mohy Eddin Elali holdng co-citizenship in the Dominican Republic, has been indicted on charge of funneling substantial money into the US presidential and Florida's last Governor's race, some of it through a man with ties to a top McCain Fundraiser who is the owner of an oil company with contracts in Iraq. Questions started to build after what the NY Times describes as 'news media' started to question some substantial donations from Arab Americans last summer. ?(o_O)? Personally this raises red flags right there. Who was wallowing through lists of donors and stopped when they saw a few Arab American names and thought it was weird? Hello, Dude. Remember the 21st century? Aren't we a little beyond that? Ohnever mind. I forgot who's century it is.
Intrigued and a little pissed that a group should be singled out, I wanted to find those other news media reports the Times was talking about. The first one I found was from er ...the Times, published last August (2008) "Family’s Donations to McCain Raise Questions". They mention a Washington Post piece to which I won't link. It becomes obvious, though, that the donors real motivation was family loyalty and trust, and those are not bad qualities, neither are the great work ethic the families show. They weren't put under indictment with this man, so I'm assuming they have settled any problems with the authorities.
Even the Times has had a bit of a problem with naming names of a rich white McCain supporter, so I'm going to let your read most of the facts at site.
One of the names involved has proven problematic to the Times so I'm going to avoid naming any but the indicted man. While using Safari3 a browser crash caused me to lose the FBI page on this even from History, but it didn't have more than the NYT or IHT article. It just alerted me to the fact there was an interesting story out there. (Caveat #google -- google is an actual number meaning a 1 with 100 zeros behind -- Until I read the Times report I was not aware that the news media had built their initial reports by singling out Arab Americans on donor lists. I was just interested in a donation crime by one man.)
