Even our friends in the Kurdish "government" are angry about the US allowing Turkey to use airspace to attack 'militants' (and their spouses apparently as at least one civilian, a woman, was killed).
Read Reuters report "Iraq Kurdish leader snubs Rice over Turkey raid "
The New York Times in "Rice in Baghdad as Tensions With Turkey Rise " says:
There were further, unconfirmed reports Tuesday of incursions by hundreds of Turkish troops a few miles into Iraqi territory. Over the years, Turkey has staged brief, small-scale incursions into Iraq to chase Kurdish militants, and keeps a small contingent of Special Forces troops at an outpost there, but the army has not entered since the American invasion in 2003.Kirkuk is one of the most potentially explosive places in Iraq, and its fate is seen as a crucial issue by all sides in the debate about whether Iraq will eventually be partitioned among Kurds, Sunni Arabs and Shiite Arabs.
And um yeah, it has a lot of oil too.
The Times report surmises that Condi's visit could smooth things over about the Turkish raid. I don't want to dump on the lady. Maybe if she stays away from thet Gawdawful talking points that the Bushies send with her she might be able to do so. People who want to tear down a female in a high position forget how constrained she most likely is. (Assuming, of course, that she was not the primary author of the "Birth Pangs of a New Middle East" BS, and that she was forced to use the phrase by those in charge. Otherwise, she gets no respect.)
Also from the Times report:
The Sunday assault was the second set of strikes against the Kurdish militant group since Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey met with President Bush in Washington last month. In the first strikes, on Dec. 1, artillery was fired from Turkish territory.
Interesting.
Does anyone know where Henry Kissinger is skulking about these days?
