I'm speechless. Aren't we all really tired of the stupid political games the Republicans play? This is just amazing.
Excerpt AP report "Cindy McCain to visit distressed Georgia":
John McCain told a crowd at a fundraiser that his wife is on her way to the embattled nation of Georgia, an announcement coming just hours before Barack Obama's wife makes a high-profile speech at the Democratic National Convention.
McCain told a crowd that wife, Cindy, was to accompany him on the California swing and he apologized for her absence.
"Cindy is not here today and I'm sorry she's not," said McCain. "She's on her way to the little country of Georgia."
McCain has been a staunch supporter of Georgia in that nation's clash with Russia, and sending his wife there underscores his commitment. It also could deflect attention from Michelle Obama's convention speech in Denver as the Obama campaign seeks to introduce the family to voters.
McCain defended his support (well his political posturing over the predicament) of the Republic of Georgia by saying it was a Christian nation (actually so is Russia), a Democracy (so is Russia), and has important oil pipelines.
That is such a wonderful train of thought. First you pretend that Russia is not something that it is twice and then you promise support of a nation because it has oil.
Yep, that sounds like Bush 43, with the Cold War added onto the twisted GWOT the Bushies got us into.
Going down the path that McCain is pretending he wants to travel in regards to Georgia leads to a military confrontation with Russia, a nation that actually has a nuclear arsenal, for which we don't have an effective block, and even if we did just one foul up would produce a horror situation that would make 911 look like a tinker toy house falling down. We used to call it the "unthinkable" as in "...if the "unthinkable" should happen...".
And we saw the "unthinkable' get nearer and nearer, not because of the actions of the "evil empire" but because of the posturing of our own politicians leading our nation into wars to stop sovereign nations from choosing the political and economic structure they wanted to have. (And in the meantime setting the world up for exploitation by Big Business concerns who would contribute heavily to mostly Republican coffers.)
There is a line that obviously runs from Nixon, through Cheney, and to John McCain. I guess you could call it a kind of Theodore Roosevelt line. but what was acceptable in the 19th century, using military force to push our values on other nations of the world, has not been considered decent and respectable since WW2.
The deaths of war criminals as a result of the post WW2 Nuremberg trials attests to the fact that the world decided that "noble ends" (actually both Germany and Japan cited goals of staving off communism as the reason for their expansionism before and during the conflict). Staving off communism was considered to be one of the noblest causes during the time, but the Nuremberg judges showed that they did not feel it warranted invasion of other countries, even though the chief American prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson, recognized that Germany at least had a real reason to feel threatened by the communists that resided in neighboring countries. He then said it was not a valid cause for war even if the world had not provided other means of countering communist expansionism. Yet, Jackson also listed a number of tactics that a nation could use to counter non violent aggression, such as trade, propaganda, treaties, etc.
If noble goals are not approved for militarily messing around in sovereign nations, especially if it causes deaths, oil and oil pipelines sure as hell don't register as a reason for military intervention to cause or continue conflict. Except, of course, in Bush-McCain World.
