WP: Rocket Slams Into Israeli Detergent Plant
"All our power generation depends on fuel oil," Public Works and Transportation Minister Mohammed Safadi said Thursday. "We are five days away from running out."
Lebanon is grappling with major public service, sanitation and environmental concerns because of the embargo and Israeli air attacks that have destroyed much of the country's infrastructure, including 80% of its bridges.

Near the end this article mentions the call up of Israeli reserves, saying the call up is for training for wider war, specifically naming Syria. (Though, of course, making it look like Hezbollah's fault.)

NY Times: Tide of Arab Opinion Turns to Support for Hezbollah
Now, with hundreds of Lebanese dead and Hezbollah holding out against the vaunted Israeli military for more than two weeks, the tide of public opinion across the Arab world is surging behind the organization, transforming the Shiite group’s leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, into a folk hero and forcing a change in official statements.
The Saudi royal family and King Abdullah II of Jordan, who were initially more worried about the rising power of Shiite Iran, Hezbollah’s main sponsor, are scrambling to distance themselves from Washington.
An outpouring of newspaper columns, cartoons, blogs and public poetry readings have showered praise on Hezbollah while attacking the United States and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for trumpeting American plans for a “new Middle East” that they say has led only to violence and repression
LA Times: Middle East War: Made in Europe
Good money to be made for anyone able to think up a reason that latest conflict between Israel and everyone around that nation is not the fault of Olmert and Bush. Actually, besides a few points to that end (easing blame of US and Israel) the article is a good analysis of what needs to be done to secure peace.
AP at KABC (Los Angeles): Joint Command Center to Track Terrorist Activity in Southern California
There are other such "fusion centers" in California and around the country, according to sheriff's Lt. Robert Galarneau.
What's different with the new center is its responsibility and scale: 62 personnel from at least 15 agencies including the federal Department of Homeland Security watch over seven counties home to more than 18 million people.
By comparison, a center in New York is operated and staffed largely by police.
Yeah, but our police our here specialize in (how shall we put it delicately) well, other things. See various commissions and mandated federal overseers for details.

AP at KABC: Justice Minister: Israel Received Permission from Rome Conference to Continue Killing.
"We received yesterday at the Rome conference permission from the world .... to continue the operation, this war, until Hezbollah won't be located in Lebanon and until it is disarmed," Israeli Justice Minister Haim Ramon told Israel's Army Radio.
"Everyone understands that a victory for Hezbollah is a victory for world terror," said Ramon, believed to be close to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Thanks Condi, Thanks Bush.
But:
In line with other EU countries, Germany called Israel's interpretation of the Rome meeting outcome a "gross misunderstanding," insisting the declaration in no way indicated that Israel should continue attacks on Lebanon.
"I would say just the opposite - yesterday in Rome it was clear that everyone present wanted to see an end to the fighting as swiftly as possible," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in Berlin.
And Bush wants to attack Iran. The posturing is reminiscent of the runup to the Iraq war only with less intelligence being declassified. I guess we are supposed to assume that Whatever Bush 'knows' is true.

'Disproportionate' in What Moral Universe?
What a bitter, nasty tirade about why Israel should be able to go on killing. So Mr. Krauthammer how about if I and some friends came and moved into your home, like Israel did to Palestine. Then we cut off your water and made you pay for it. Also we trashed parts of the house you live in. Then If you or you neighbors do anything in response took the best parts of the house that you can still resided in or I parts of your neighbor's houses. Do you understand the problem now?
If you have complaints you can suck it up because we aren't going to listen and do anything about it.. You can plant a garden and we can bring bulldozers and tear it down or even burn it. For the Palestinians it is even worse though because that is often their only way to feed their families and make some money. So let say we blockaded you from your work. And you will have to imagine for yourself other things similar to what Israel has done to its neighbors as you obviously can with glee, because I can't go there.
That is why the Palestinians do what they do. Hezbollah does what it does because Israel invaded their nation once before and has shown it is ready to invade a nation, supposedly for a buffer zone and then planted Israeli farmers on it just waiting for more attacks it seems, so that it could grab another 'buffer zones' of quality arable acreage. If people know these facts, it looks quite a bit like Israel has expansionist ambitions, not protective ones.
What Israel needs to do to protect itself is to stop its expansionist habits, treat its neighbors and the Palestinians well and talk to them about their needs and concerns. Help develop trades in Palestine to offset the land they took from them and above all stop grabbing land, and killing and destroying in the areas the have left.
Problem solved. Or they can go with your solution: killing killing killing! We know that Bush and most of the Republicans back the latter.
