Excerpt AP report at Google.com "AP Investigation: Ike environmental toll apparent ":
Hurricane Ike's winds and massive waves destroyed oil platforms, tossed storage tanks and punctured pipelines. The environmental damage only now is becoming apparent: At least a half million gallons of crude oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico and the marshes, bayous and bays of Louisiana and Texas, according to an analysis of federal data by The Associated Press.
The report says there were no 'major' oil spills. I'm guessing they mean no oil spills big enough to get a reporter out to cover just that. Still half a million gallons is pretty disastrous for a lot of plants and creatures.
Analysis of the spillage surrounding Katrina reached 9 million gallons, almost as much as during the Exxon Valdez incident, but the Interior Secretary declared that insignificant.
One wonders what would be significant to off shore drilling proponents.
