This is an ad that ran in Mexico with a map showing Mexico at lines imagined for the nation before the Mexican-American war.
Obviously, this is a smart move (like 'smart' diplomacy between parties in a newly 'democratic' nation stops elections-- so a lot of sarcasm in that "smart" description).
One thing every ad person knows is that you promise the world to your potential customers-users. And in the case of an alcoholic beverage, if they drink enough of your product maybe they will permanently think that half of the US belongs to them. Look at what alcohol did for our current president. He thinks half the world should belong to his big business buddies that will help support him as a billionaire in his post presidency.
The big question is whether the average Mexican can even afford Absolut. So I'm thinking this is aimed at the over-class of Mexico, who should know better.
"Then again, a quick look at American advertising lets you know that anything goes and unfortunately, most of us tend to believe the stupid lies of advertising, often screwing up not only our purchasing decisions, but sometimes even our lives.
Obviously, Mexico was in no shape to administer or even protect such a territory in 1848, which makes it clear that they didn't 'own' the area as they like to claim.
