It caused a huge misallocation in the English-speaking economies into real estate, and into consumption that could only seem to make sense to people drunk on the appreciation of property prices. Kristoff at the IHT (the international version of the NY Times) on how this summer's decision by the Bush administration to name birth control pills as a form of abortion is playing out in Africa. Remember that US help in third world countries for abortion is against the law. So the extra mouths to feed that could lead to backroom abortions and other dangerous situations cannot even be prevented. You have to ask why the religious right feels a need to overpopulate the world so that more living children will die. Are they hoping for more wars which would need more soldiers with which to fight them?

Nor do they ramble through smaltzy exclamations of how much you know I'm suffering, which claiming you'll go to Hell to get bin Laden or promise a mortgage relief program you have no intention of really creating. But they were known as rebels, progressive ones, from fighting for the rights of the indentured to protecting draft resisters. And one of them did refuse to brand his cattle, making their family name synonymous with being unbranded. Nicholas D. Kristof: Racism Without Racists

Kristof says that people aren't necessarily racist, but tend to favor their own kind without knowing it. I hope he's wrong. This article was based on information that he acquired from a poll at Stanford University. It seems to me that the good news would be that a person who doesn't know he or she is a bit racist doesn't have to lie to pollsters about it right? So that 'nonracism' should be already factored in, and in fact some of Kristof's words seem to indicate that to be true.

Now I don't want to call Mr. Gibson a liar, especially a deliberate one, and especially a deliberate liar who gets a lot of capital gains in a year and makes more than the $250k. But he misrepresented how capital gains act after changes in the tax rate according to FactCheck.org "".

Fact check.org explains that though the moderator was technically correct about capital gains taxes returns going up immediately following cuts to the capital gains tax...

Gibson’s claim is partially right. Cutting the capital gains tax rate does stimulate at least a temporary, short-term increase in revenue by giving owners of appreciated assets (such as real estate or stocks) an incentive to sell them and turn their paper profits into cash. The boost in capital gains income can offset the loss to the government from the lower rate.

The long-term revenue effects of changes to the capital gains tax rate are less certain, however. For example, in 1990, when Congress was considering a 30 percent cut in the capital gains tax rate, Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation and the Treasury’s Office of Tax Analysis both attempted to compute the revenue effects of the cuts. OTA predicted at $12 billion increase in revenue over five years. JCT predicted an $11 billion loss over five years. Academic studies have produced similarly conflicting results.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded in 2002 that cuts to the capital gains tax rate "may not be enough to produce additional receipts over a long period" but "may do so over a few years." Similarly, Jane Gravelle, a tax policy specialist with the Congressional Research Service, says that the empirical evidence on capital gains tax rate changes "does not clearly point to a specific response and revenue cost," adding that the latest research shows "more modest" change than economists had previously thought.
