Summary Al Jazeera report "Somali pirates drown with ransom":The Saudi Tanker "Sirius Star" was released after a reward of 3 million dollars was parachuted to the pirates aboard. Afterwards the pirates tried to get away in a small overloaded boat at high speed, in a storm and according to the Al Jazeera report only three survived and the reward is at the bottom of the ocean.
Apologies to those who think Al Jazeera is bad, but only they and something called Press TV was carrying the story as indicated on Google News (and I couldn't get that site to open within a minute so I went to AJ). I tried some older links and even the BBC didn't have anything except the release of the ship and BBC is often the quickest of western mainstream to get things from Africa and the Middle East. (I think they go read Al Jazeera reports, use their information, and don't admit it.)
Come to think of it: I wonder if this could be a scam, to keep authorities from tracing the money and themselves, and other pirates or warlords coming to get a hefty share for themselves. Then again I might just be looking claim credit for the idea if, in fact, this silly conjecture does turn out to be true. I imagine that marking materials were put onto the cash, not that that would matter in the failed state of Somalia.
Also, please read longer report "Who Are the Real Pirates of the African Horn? Not Who You Might Think ".
Update: BBC now has a one line sentence in report "Saudi tanker crew 'safe and well' " on the drownings. Personally, I think that shows they probably got the info from wire reports or AJ. And maybe they are a bit sceptical of the report too. I actually like the blogger way, linking to the sources of one's assertions so other people can get more information and decide for themselves. Still the BBC is often bolder than most American mainstream sources.
