On Monday's "To the Point" podcast from KCRW (NPR station in Santa Monica, CA hosted by Warren Olney) a lobbyist for the private health care industry asserted that in France (which a single payer advocate was holding up as a good example for the US) most people end up paying for extra health care. From what I heard he seemed to at least imply this was private insurance.
But an advocate for single payer countered his implication (and politely) by telling Mr. Olney that the extra insurance was cheap, from the government and paid for services not usually provided by basic insurance in the US like dental implants.
(A promoter for the president's ideal of private and public health care plans was also on the program, but didn't respond to this and may have already left as I don't remember him speaking again.)
It was also funny to hear the lobbyist whining that Americans needed choice while working to kill the idea of even a public option.
Meanwhile most of Mainstream News is covering this like a horse race plus talking points mostly from the private health care industry and the Congressionals that look to get money from it.
And I hate to say it, but backers of President Obama's public-private ideal are coming across as not very informative. Really WH folks, with all the lies from the private sector being thrown about we need information, not opinions.
Sure it starts out understandable that we need at least some public option, but the lobbyists and their right wing repeaters have hundreds of lies, and even the president's wise assertions aren't enough to stem the toxic tide of dishonesty they extrude.
