The New York Times today reran a 1990 oped that ends with the idea that invading Myanmar for civil rights reasons might be a good idea.
The point is that this is the intelligent thinking of the Republican party. This is the good. The ability to think cogently about invading another country (which Bush 41 did as much as his son -- well so far, but with better results because he didn't bite off more than he could chew).
The intelligent discussion of killing the citizens of a nation people to effect regime change (in a country that just happens to have some resources we could use) shows the disconnect of the neocons.
It's nothing personal. We just came for your oil. And now you're free to work for our corporations. Can you thank us enough?
NY Times Op-Classic, 1990: Are Invasions Sometimes O.K.?
The Times says that it pulls up something from its archives "that we hope sheds light on current news or provides a window on the past".
In fact, though this actually looks like a good ringer oped that has helped the neocons build a new base for a future invasion (Maybe not this year, of course. Remember how long they worked on getting an invasion into Iraq. Then again, if Cheney thinks the junta is weak enough. One more chance to get it right. Easier than regime change in Iran. Could lift Americans spirits, hopes, and John McCain's chances... ? So Who knows?)
This last week we saw, not only the news out of Myanmar which was bad enough, but also a concerted propaganda campaign that came just short of calling for regime change.
