Gee, we are certainly a trio, The US, Israel, and Russia.
I really am not understanding why most mainstream news media personnel aren't getting the joke. As our little president dances around Putin at the Olympics (making sure to make statements, but also making sure not to miss the games. Leaving in a huff would make too clear a statement and keep our boy from enjoying his rightful place in the sun one last time) and Right Wing politicians send up a call to arms against the old Evil Empire (which they have no desire to actually effectuate. That would make their intentions after getting Pillsbury Doughboy installed as president a little too clear. It's just that calling for 'action against that evil empire --and some are intimating they actually think Russia is planning to restore it-- is a cheap way to get votes from knee jerk Rusky haters.) why can't they see how much this incident is just "us" again as seen in the funhouse mirrors. Changed, but still the same.
We had Saddam bottled up and compliant. Oh Hell yes everyone knew he was compliant, that's why they had to get their war going right away, before it could be proven. But that wasn't enough. Saddam had to be punished and Iraq had to be freed from rulers who thought their oil was, well, 'theirs'..
Again with Israel. Take action against Israel and you will get ten times the response. They may hold thousands of your people, including women and children in prison for decades, but if you take some action to get some of those people back, they feel they have a right to kill another 1000 of your folks. And Condi will be hanging around offering approval and singing about the "birth pangs of the new Middle East".
But let Russia try the same kind of shenanigans after Georgia killed some of the larger nation's peacekeepers and civilians and the American right suddenly has a new election-year cause. They will fight the evil empire for us, as long as that fight solely includes making speeches and writing columns of great force against the evility of Russian evilness, accepting large donations due to their promises of fighting the aforementioned evil evility, and accepting positions of power within the national or state legislatures (or even the presidency) based on their intention to wipe Russian evilness from the face of the earth (as long as they can do it from the comfort of a chair or the pedestal of a podium).
I'm not saying that Russia is correct in invading further into Georgia --though the initial invasion into South Ossetia was covered by the Alamo clause -- you remember c. 170 years ago when we invaded a breakaway province of Mexico because they were killing Americans there. George Bush should remember that. If we hadn't, he would have had to run for the position of el presidente de los Estados Unidos de Mexico instead of president of the United Stated of America. Hopefully in that case his Spanish would have been a great improvement over the crappy kindergarten knock off he tries to speak in this life.
Still, yeah, their continued advance is too much like what our own nation deals out for minor infringements of our sensibilities, like nationalizing our oil just because it happens to lie under your nation, or that Israel wields for minor infarctions, a punishment that will get a lot of innocent civilian killed.
But neither the US nor Israel have much they can say about the mess, seriously.
Yeah, Russia has gone to far, but, the US really has little cache of integrity to spend complaining about invasions of sovereign nations. At least Russia didn't travel half way around the world for invasion, like one country we know. And, hey, if they don't make an incredible mess of the job and kill or displace 1/4 of its citizens, they'll be beating the Bushies any old day.
