Info from the Bureau of Labor Statistics: Employment Situation Summary for October 2006.
4.4% Unemployment?
First of all you have to add 3% to the unemployment rate to compare it to Clinton era rates because 12% of prime working age men have dropped out of the work force (link) compared to 6% during Clinton's tenure. Then assume that half the work force is women (again giving the Bush administration the benefit of the doubt) and so get the 3% more or 7.4% unemployment rate compared to Clinton's numbers.
Blacks still have nearly double the unemployement rate as whites.
34,000 Government jobs were created in October. I guess the government can get it right about that right.
So subtracting the 34k jobs from the 92k new jobs we have only 58,000 new non government non farm jobs in October 2006.
Even up at top we can see that 56,000 people dropped out of the workforce in October. That helped lower that Unemployment rate for Bush, but probably not as much as the i
maginary jobs the BLS has been cooking up since January 2004.
Manufacturing down 39.000 jobs
Construction down 26,000 jobs
Retail down 3000 jobs
Service-providing industries up 152,000 jobs. I guess times are good in collection departments these days.
