From where I sit it seems that mainstream news has decided that there is definitely one person who had no hand in the Minnesota Bridge Collapse.
Maybe I'm too removed from the area, but I haven't heard a discouraging word about him. I was going to start saying some myself if Governor Tim Pawlenty was picked as McCain's running mate, but I'd think someone would say something anyway.
I know if a Democrat (or DFL in Minnesota) had been governor when a major bridge fell down killing 13 people, he or she would be lucky to keep their position. What is it with Republican governors?
Now people are suing the company that inspected the bridge and the company that was storing 300 tons (600,000 lbs) of construction equipment on the bridge at the time of the collapse, and they're right to do so. But I don't hear anything about the 17 years of Republican and Reform party leadership bent on cutting costs on infrastructure in the state. They also apparently didn't make sure they heard what they needed to hear about the ability of the struts on the bridge to bear the kind of stresses they were being asked to hold.
Gray Davis lost his seat because utilities scammed California through a privatization scheme started and pushed by his two Republican predecessors though Davis started mitigating power shortages as soon as he got into office.
Davis had even proved by the time he left that the utilities ran scams on the state and recovered big money from them.
The MN Department of Transportation director of Homeland Security and Emergency Response didn't come back to the state for 10 days after the collapse. Sure she was fired, and she wasn't a direct appointment from Pawlenty, but one thing about being the executive, you are supposed to be where the buck stops. That's because the governor sets the tone of the administration. Is it one in which officials are there to serve the people or one in which they are there to get honor and money and make speeches should anything bad happen.
But with Republicans that buck gets real slippery, really quickly. If anything bad happens it's sliding across the floor and out through an open portal faster than ice on a hot griddle.
Some say Tim Pawlenty may even run for president in 2012.
Still, this goes beyond Pawlenty.
Guess where that fired MNDOT Emergency Response director ended up? In the US Department of Homeland Security as Transportation Security Specialist. I'm sure she's busy in her new position doing a heck of a job. If you read both articles linked here about her the questions just get weirder.
After we've seen that emergency coordination is so critical, why are Republican administrations willing to play such games and how are they able get away with it?
